Courage for the Costly Way title image showing modern-day believers walking together in warm light, symbolizing faithful discipleship, courage, trust, and the call of Matthew 10:24-39 to follow Jesus even when faith costs comfort.
“Small acts of welcome matter because receiving others can become a way of receiving Christ.”
Matthew 10:40-42

A Cup of Welcome reflects on Matthew 10:40-42 and Jesus’ reminder that small acts of welcome matter deeply in the kingdom of heaven. After warning His disciples that mission would bring rejection and hardship, Jesus ends with a word about hospitality. Some people will open the door, receive the message, and offer kindness to weary servants on the road.

The image of a cup of cold water shows that faithfulness does not have to be impressive to be holy. God sees the simple acts of mercy others may overlook: a greeting, a meal, a note, a visit, a listening ear, or space made for someone who wonders whether they belong. In Christ’s kingdom, quiet kindness offered in love carries eternal weight.

This passage also reminds us that welcome is more than politeness. When we receive the people Christ sends and love the people Christ loves, we make room for Christ Himself. Because Jesus has welcomed us with grace, we are called to welcome others with open hearts, open hands, and ordinary mercy offered in His name.
